Land of the Traditional Owners: Land of the Yuwi People of the Yuwi Traditional Country
This project unlocks unused laneway space to create a lively and attractive event space which complements adjoining commercial uses - achieved via a focus on functionality including safety, walkability, waste disposal, accessibility for events and flexibility of use.
While this project was initially supported by council grants, the collaboration between council, property owners and businesses (including local artists) enabled the project to be a success.
The Fifth Lane revitalisation project is more than a capital project or a piece of public art, but rather, provided a managed event space to ensure on-going community benefit.
The project demonstrates how Placemaking projects can achieve multiple community benefits with limited capital expenditure. Congratulations goes to Mackay Regional Council and Mackay Laneway Project on an exceptional project.
