Logan Village Place to Play Stakeholder Engagement | QLD

The Logan Village Place to Play Stakeholder Engagement was developed to assist in the design of a new park at Logan Village, Queensland.
The focus on play and particularly how children use a playground was observed through formal and informal methods, including loose parts play at Council led events (“observations rather than conversations”). The approach provided a unique and innovative method of consultation not seen elsewhere. The design exercise was inclusive with a range of cultures and ages; and included engagement at schools as well as a community event. Over 500 design ideas were compiled from the local community, demonstrating how effective the approach was to engaging those who will use the playground most but are traditionally less involved in the design process.
The project is to be commended for its inclusive and alternative approach to consultation with the local community. The judges felt that the project provided completely different way of approaching playground design and engagement, by providing for interactive consultation in collaboration of children of various ages, abilities and cultures. This style of engagement is exemplary and could easily be applied at a national scale and transferred to other projects involving designing places for children.
